The article presents the development of RSS systems (push-the-bit, point-the-bit and hybrid systems), the use of which has significantly contributed to improving the effectiveness of directional drilling and facilitated the production of boreholes with very demanding trajectories. Innovative solutions contribute to obtaining an optimal drilling technology, which minimizes the possibility of occurrence of drilling failures and significantly improves the safety of works. Real-life geophysical data transmissions in the course of drilling with the RSS system can be used to make in-situ decisions to alter the borehole trajectory and to stay in layers with the best collecting properties.

The article presents selected examples of the applications in JSW S.A. “Knurów-Szczygłowice” Hard Coal Mine, the experiences gathered and remarks recorded in the course of use of mechanical PEGAZ and PEGAZ/II devices in extreme longwall sections to substitute for individual casings, and UDR-MAMUT devices to mechanize the liquidation of longwall pits right after wall fronts. The use of PEGAZ and PEGAZ/II devices reduces the work load for each longwall, which has beneficial effect on the production results obtained. The only factor which limits their use is the longitudinal inclination of the longwall pit. UDR-MAMUT devices assist in dismantling tunnels pit casings, but are unsuitable for pits with specific cross-sections. The purpose of using all of the said devices is to improve the safety of mine staff.

Starting with the post-war years, regulations governing machine operation have changed with the economy, the general level of education of citizens and the technical progress of machines. Economic progress resulted in increased access to innovative machines, and regulations were modified to provide easier access to earth, road and construction machine operator training. The latest changes in the law have simplified the requirements for machine operator licenses, including, by limiting the license classes and establishing the obligation of obtaining a license for a series of machines (mainly processing machines). This does not reduce the employers’ responsibility for fulfilling the conditions for admitting an employee to specific work, nor does it release the employers from the obligation to verify all requirements specified in detailed regulations referring to the specific character of the company’s operations, as well as to the operation of machines, devices and installations.
