Post-mining areas: spaces full of potential

26 June 2026

On 25 June, the second edition of the conference “The Future of Post-Mining Areas” was held in Sosnowiec at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia.

The event brought together representatives of the mining sector, public administration, academia, environmental organisations and local governments, who discussed how to balance the management of mineral resources with social, economic and environmental challenges. Nearly 300 participants attended the conference, taking part in lectures and discussions focused on the future of post-mining regions.

The topic of the conference is becoming increasingly important in the context of the ongoing economic and energy transition. It extends far beyond the borders of Upper Silesia, highlighting the opportunities offered by former mining areas. The infrastructure left behind by closed mines can become a valuable asset — supporting the development of innovative technologies, new economic activities and sustainable projects.

“Here, in the Zagłębie region, we have shown that post-mining areas can be successfully revitalised and transformed into spaces serving new purposes,” said Piotr Litwa, President of the State Mining Authority.

Prof. Krzysztof Szamałek emphasised the importance of dialogue between different perspectives: “Events such as today’s conference create a valuable platform for discussion and for finding solutions that reconcile environmental protection with the responsible use of natural resources to meet the needs of society.”

The presentations delivered during the conference confirmed these conclusions by showcasing examples of successful regeneration of post-mining areas. Participants highlighted that former mining sites should not be perceived solely as a legacy of industrial activity, but as areas with significant potential — containing valuable infrastructure that can support economic development, tourism, recreation and local initiatives.

The conference was organised by the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute, the State Mining Authority and the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia in Katowice.
