The longest road tunnel in Poland to be bored beneath the Oder River

22 May 2026

On 22 May in Police, Piotr Litwa, President of the State Mining Authority, participated in a press briefing following the signing of the contract for the construction of the third section of the Szczecin Western Bypass (S6) between Police and Goleniów. This section will include a tunnel beneath the Oder River and is set to become the longest road tunnel in Poland.

The project is considered one of the most challenging infrastructure undertakings in the history of Polish road construction. Building a tunnel under the Oder River will require not only substantial financial investment but also the application of advanced geological, mining, and engineering technologies.

The tunnel will consist of two independent tubes, each carrying two lanes of traffic. Excavation will be carried out using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with a diameter of approximately 15 metres. A total of 19 cross-passages will connect the two tunnel tubes, serving primarily as emergency escape routes. The lowest point of the structure will reach a depth of up to 51 metres below ground level, while the roadway itself will be located at a depth of up to 45 metres.

The opening of the tunnel section is scheduled for 2033 at the earliest. The total value of the project is expected to exceed PLN 5 billion. The project will be delivered by a consortium consisting of NDI S.A. and the Turkish company Dogus Construction.
