The shields 'Anna' and 'Krystyna' have finished tunnelling the second line of the Warsaw Metro

22 May 2025

On Wednesday, 21 May, the TBMs 'Anna' and 'Krystyna' completed excavating the right tunnel of the second metro line in Warsaw.

The retrieval shaft in front of Bemowo station has been reached. This way, the last tunnel section in this part of the project was completed. The works began on 14 August 2024 and lasted nearly nine months. They included the construction of three transit tunnels with a total length of 6398 metres. More than 170,000 cubic metres of rock mass were removed from the section between the Karolin and Bemowo stations. The production of almost 3,800 tubs used for the tunnel lining on this section consumed 30.5 thousand cubic metres of concrete mix and more than 3.3 thousand tonnes of steel. The completion of the tunnelling is a crucial stage of the construction. It will take about a month to dismantle and bring the TBM shields to the surface. Construction of the platforms, staircases, escape links between the tunnels and ventilation rooms for the rail tunnel at the lowest levels will soon begin. At the same time, the equipment, track and other infrastructure will be installed in the tunnels. Construction is expected to be completed in 2026.
